Step-by-Step Guide: How to Apply for Suica Card and Travel Across Japan

Japan’s Suica card is an essential companion for travelers and residents alike, offering seamless access to trains, buses, shops, vending machines, and more.

Here’s a detailed guide on how to get one and make the most of it.

What Is Suica?

Suica, short for “Super Urban Intelligent Card,” is a contactless prepaid smart-card system managed by JR East.

Originally launched in November 2001, today it’s accepted by numerous transport operators across Japan, thanks to the Nationwide Mutual Usage Service.

You can also use it for day-to-day purchases at convenience stores, kiosks, taxis, and select vending machines.

Types of Suica Cards

There are several Suica options to choose from.

  • Standard (green) Suica – A rechargeable card with a 500 ¥ deposit, valid for 10 years
  • My Suica (Registered/Nominative) – Your name is printed on the card, enabling balance recovery if lost
  • Welcome Suica – Designed for short-term visitors: no deposit, valid for 28 days, non-refundable
  • Mobile/Digital Suica – Virtual Suica stored in Apple Pay or Google Pay on compatible phones
  • VIEW Suica (Credit‑linked) – A Suica with auto-reload via an integrated credit card—requires a View Card from JR East

Where to Apply / Buy

At JR East station ticket machines or service counters (Midori no Madoguchi) across Tokyo, Shinjuku, Shibuya, Narita, and Haneda Airports

RMachines accept English and offer instant issuance (e.g., 2,000 ¥ = 500 ¥ deposit + 1,500 ¥ stored value).

Welcome Suica is available only at airport/train station outlets in Tokyo and nearby.

Digitally

Apple Pay: On iPhone 8 or newer, simply add Suica in Wallet and load credit.

Google Pay: On FeliCa-compatible Android devices with the region set to Japan

How to Apply for a Suica Card

A Suica Card can be acquired easily in various locations.

A. At the Ticket Machine

Find a machine labeled “Suica” near the gates. Switch to English via the language button.

Choose “New Suica.” Select amount (¥2,000–¥10,000); ¥500 is a deposit. Pay in cash (coins or bills).

Collect your card and receipt.

B. At a JR Station Counter

You can also request My Suica (registered) here by providing your name, birth date, and phone number.

Reloading Your Suica

Suica can be topped up in several ways:

  • Ticket machines – Insert your Suica, select “Charge,” and deposit cash (minimum ¥500).
  • Convenience stores – Use the cashier or a special ATM within 7‑Eleven, Lawson, and others.
  • Suica app on phone – Digital versions can be recharged via linked credit cards in the app or Apple Wallet.

Note: Physical Suica cannot be topped up with a regular credit card, unless it's a VIEW Suica or you use cash at a JR office.

Using Suica on Trains & Beyond

For train & bus rides, tap your card at both entry and exit gates; the fare is deducted automatically.

In Shinkansen, you can’t buy the ticket with Suica, but if you have a VIEW Suica, you can auto-charge and ride the non-reserved east-Japan Shinkansen.

At shopping & vending, tap at checkout when you see the IC card logo.

VIEW Suica & Credit‑Linked Auto‑Reload

For frequent users, a VIEW Suica (sometimes called View Card Suica) is a credit card with an integrated Suica wallet.

You can make an automatic recharge when the balance is low and earn points on purchases.

Interest Rates & Fees

Read the full fees and terms on the View Card website when applying.

  • Standard interest: around 15% annual interest on revolving credit.
  • Late payment interest: up to 18% APR.

Returning/Refunding Your Suica

If you’re leaving Japan and want your deposit refunded, visit any JR East station counter (Midori no Madoguchi).

Fill in a form and surrender your card.

¥500 deposit is refunded, minus a ¥220 handling fee (i.e., net ¥280), if you return a standard Suica.

Welcome Suica is non-refundable and expires after 28 days.

Traveling with Mobile Suica

Preload Suica on your iPhone or Android.

Use Apple Wallet: “Express Transit” feature works even when on low battery.

Must be supported hardware & region; iPhone 8+ and Japanese-region Google Pay for Android.
