What Exactly is Barre?

Each class is meant to be a full-body workout that is divided into different sections that target major muscle groups. Each muscle group is fatigued using targeted movements, light weights, high repetition, or resistance.

An average barre class will have you starting on the floor, and there will usually be fast, energetic music playing throughout the studio. It’s going to be you and about 20 other people, and the instructor will guide you through a series of intense, small movements that shape certain areas of your body.
The thing that distinguishes barre from a regular gym workout is the variety of exercises that you do in each class. The entire class is very fast-paced, challenging you consistently while never letting you grow bored.
You’ll use a strap or cables, a ball, a mat, and small hand weights in each class, and these things are usually provided for you. The ball is used mostly for working your thighs out.
For example, the instructor may tell you to place the ball between your thighs and squeeze. The ball can also be used to pass around your legs while doing an ab workout on the floor, or it could even go behind your knee to work on your glutes.
The strap is used with resistance or stretching. You may need to hold the strap in your hands and pull it apart to keep your arms in good form. When it comes to the hand weights, they will be used for working out your arms.
The mat will be on the floor for the entire class, and it is used as a cushion for many other creative exercises. A favorite with the mat is having it halfway up the wall, sitting on it, and pulling on the bottom to work out the arms and abs.
Grip socks, which are also called sticky socks, is the only special item that you are required to bring with you to your classes. They will stop you from sliding while doing your exercises, and if you forget them, you can probably buy another pair from your studio.
Is Barre Only For Dancers?
Most people are far from capable ballet dancers, and many will agree that barre class is for everyone. The community consists of people who are just starting on their fitness journey, as well as people who have tried every other form of fitness out there.
